Gigaom Research: Unifying Petabyte-Scale Unstructured Data: Enhancing Enterprise Data Value

Report Reveals Data Centric Approach Solves Data Management Complexities

Boston, Mass. – September 3, 2014 – Tarmin Inc., a global pioneer of Data Defined Storage solutions, today announced a storage industry report, “Unifying petabyte-scale unstructured data: enhancing enterprise data value.” The report highlights the benefits of an enterprise-wide data-management strategy that allows an organization to unlock the true value of data, consistently apply data-governance policies and harness all unstructured data across the entire enterprise estate for big data analytics applications. Fragmented data storage continues to hamper the delivery of information to business users. Application developers and managers are aware of information silos and have tried to integrate them with middleware, adding additional expense and complexity to the application environment. Implementing an enterprise-wide data storage architecture can break down the barriers and position the enterprise to tap its information for new and expanded business opportunities. This type of data centric approach defines an emerging storage market category known as Data Defined Storage.

“When an enterprise wrestles with pockets of application-specific data, analytic projects stall, operations is forced to perform redundant work, and business managers may not even know what data is available to guide decisions,” according to author John Webster of Gigaom Research.“[A solution is] letting the data — its usage and its business value — define the enterprise storage environment and expose data now locked in silos to multiple business applications and analytics processes without adding cost, complexity and risk.

The report highlights the opportunities inherent in deploying data centric approach to storage, including:

  • Automatically identify and classify data
  • Rationalize the storage environment by balancing the value of data with the value of the underlying infrastructure
  • Reduce the overall cost of data protection by separating out low-value data from daily backup cycles
  • Implement a process for eventual data deletion that will eliminate the need to pay for storage that supports useless and obsolete data

A data centric approach to storage can foster an enterprise-wide acknowledgment of the value of data so business user groups can see the value in sharing information, and expose the data locked in silos to multiple business applications and analytics processes without adding cost, complexity and risk. In addition, the data can be used for effective risk management.

“Amidst today’s tsunami of accelerating growth and the massive scale of data sets, a data centric approach to storage can greatly reduce storage costs by eliminating unnecessary copies of the data,” noted Webster. “The larger the data, the more massive the savings.”
